New Manufacturing Method

SITUATION

Develop a method for the manufacture of a granular fabric softener that could be blended into spray-dry laundry detergent without segregation. Support plant start-up at mine site.

SOLUTION

A form of bentonite clay was identified as the active agent for the product. The clay was agglomerated and dried to form granules with the same bulk density as the laundry detergent. Process parameters for binding agent level and drying conditions were determined in semi-work scale testing.

BENEFITS

A production system was installed at the clay-mining site and the fabric softener was put into production in eight months. Two U.S. patents were issued for the process and application of the material.
